Alternatives to Surgery

Non-surgical treatments can be divided into five basic categories:-

Fillers, Botulinum toxins (Botox), Re-surfacing, Biorejuvenation and Thread Lifting

Fillers

Wrinkle fillers are basically natural or bio-engineered materials which are injected or implanted into lines, scars or creases, and are also used to add volume to the skin.

 Botulinum toxins (Botox)

Originally this was used as a medical therapy to treat eye spasms and disorders of the nervous system.  It has been used for almost decades for cosmetic purposes.

The material used is Botulinum toxin A, a purified protein made from botulism bacteria, which binds to the nerve endings preventing the release of the chemical transmitter which activates muscles. When injected into specific areas of the face it paralyses the small muscles that cause frown lines, crow’s feet and other wrinkles.

Re-surfacing

Skin re-surfacing can be sub divided into three categories: chemical peels, microdermabrasion and lasers.

Biorejuvenation

This technique is a form of meso-therapy using micro-injections, which go under the skin and are absorbed by the mesoderm (middle layer). The technique infuses the dermis to re-vitalise the skin.

Thread Lifting

This is a non-surgical technique which involves tiny barbed sutures or fine threads being placed below the skin through tiny cuts in hidden places such as behind the hairline or the ears. These sutures have microscopic bristles (called barbs) on them, which stay in place as new collagen bundles form around them.

Threads are currently being used to lift and elevate saggy brows, mid face or cheek areas.
